Labial enhancement, or labiaplasty, is a surgical procedure that falls into the category of vaginal rejuvenation. These procedures may be recommended for women who have experienced significant changes to their vagina or labia due to childbirth or the aging process. In some cases, women are born with an irregular vagina, which can lead to discomfort and self-consciousness. Labia enhancement restores this area of a woman’s anatomy, leading to greater comfort in some types of clothing and during intimacy.
Who is it For?
Labia enhancement may be recommended in the following circumstances:
- The patient is self-conscious about the appearance of her labia
- The labia is causing pain and irritation in some types of clothing
- The labia is restricting a woman’s ability to participate in some physical activities
- The patient finds intimacy uncomfortable both physically and emotionally
- The appearance of the labia is interfering with the patient’s relationships
Labiaplasty may be performed alone or in combination with a vaginoplasty or clitoral unhooding, depending on the specific needs and desired outcome of the individual patient.
How does it Work?
Labiaplasty can be performed on an outpatient basis using local anesthesia and sedation. During the procedure, Dr. Sanjay Sharma often uses techniques to remove and restore any excess labial tissue and redundancy to augment the labia. Fat cells may be removed via liposuction from another area like the chin, abdomen or thighs. The fat is harvested and then injected directly into the labia, creating a fuller lip to the area.
Recovery from labiaplasty usually takes 1-2 weeks, with restrictions on strenuous activity and intercourse lasting even longer. Patients may use oral pain medication during the early days after surgery to manage any post-op discomfort. Some bruising or swelling in the area is normal and will subside within 7-10 days.
What does it Do?
Results of labia enhancement probably won’t be evident right away, particularly since the area will be tender and swollen after surgery. However, patients that have this procedure usually experience a higher level of comfort in certain types of clothing and during some physical activities. Intercourse may also be more enjoyable once the area fully heals.
