Soft-tissue fillers (Artefill®, Restylane®, Fat injections)

These soften facial wrinkles, nasal troughs, augment lips and cheeks, and plump out naso-labial folds caused by sagging skin. Engineered products, such as hyaluronic acid (Restylane®) are found naturally in the body, and serve to form a lasting substance for tissue ingrowth that keeps shape for many months after injection. Two to three injections spaced several weeks apart are all that is needed with little to no down-time. Fuller lips, reduced wrinkles, and improved facial contours can be achieved with soft tissue fillers. In contrast to previous collagen products, no allergy testing is needed prior to delivery.

The Newest FDA approved soft tissue implant is Artefill®, a product that incorporates microspheres in a bovine collagen matrix that has primary indications for correction of nasolabial folds. Clinical data show improved tissue ingrowth and longevity that surpasses any other product on the market. Results can last years instead of a few months. Fat injections offer the peace of mind for natural injectible fillers since it is derived from the patient's own body. The effects are not as long lasting, and several treatments may be required to effect permanent change. The fat is harvested from the abdomen or thigh, spun down into syringes, and injected into the areas of concern. Certainly, an overcorrection is necessary to take into account the eventual resorption of the fat, perhaps as much as 50% from the initial injection.

BOTOX®

Botulinum toxin is purified into an injectable form and delivered into the muscles of the face and neck causing the wrinkles. The temporary paralysis of the muscles smooths the skin overlying the muscles, giving a refreshed, more alert appearance. The results typically last 3-4 months, with repeat injections given at the request of the patient when wrinkles return.
